How
often should I tan?
You
should tan every other day. When you're in the process of
building a base tan, you're sending a message to the skin cell that
makes pigment, telling it to make more pigment. It takes
anywhere from 36-48 hours for that cell to process that
message. Tanning every day does not speed up this process and
in fact may slow it down, because you put your skin at a higher risk
of a damaging burn by tanning every day.
Should
I roll over when I'm laying in the tanning bed?
Lying
in different positions while your tanning can improve the evenness
of your tan. For example, you can lay on your stomach with
your chin resting on your hands and you will get more UV on your
throat and underarms.
Most people end up falling asleep and utilize our wide variety of
equipment to help them even out their tan, like the Radius
standup unit at our Northridge location or one of our Big
Daddy's .
Is
it ok to use the same bed every time I tan?
We
all tend to be creatures of habit.
We come in to tan, we go in the same bed every time, and we
get into a tanning rut. If
this is a good description of your tanning habits, then you might
not be getting the best tan you can get.
We want you to get the best tan for your money.
To help you achieve that, we change our lamps more frequently
than what is recommended. What
you as a consumer may not know is that we do not use the same types
of lamps in all of our equipment.
Tanning lamps have a mixture of Ultraviolet light, that
mixture determines how much pigment your skin will make and how that
pigment gets darker.
The tanning process works
like this; your skin is exposed to two types of Ultraviolet light, A
& B. Type B helps
your skin produce more pigment, but it is also the type that can
cause a sunburn if you get too much of it.
Type A turns pigment brown, giving you a tanned appearance.
So, what does all this have to do with what bed you tan in?
We have some beds that emit a higher amount of Type B, some
that emit a higher amount of Type A and some that emit an even
mixture of A & B. If
you consistently use the same bed all the time, you might not be
getting a good mix of both A and B.
It’s this mix that will give you the best tan possible.
Many people prefer the equipment with the highest Type B
output because it gives them a slight red or pinkish tinge and they
“think” they’re getting a better tan.
That equipment may help their skin produce more pigment, but
the result is that they are pigment rich and tan poor, because they
don’t expose their skin to enough Type A to darken that newly
formed pigment.
How long should I wait
before taking a shower after tanning?
You can shower immediately
after tanning. The only exception to this would be for those
customers using a 'tingle' or 'hot action' lotion or a bronzing
lotion with DHA. If you use a 'tingle' lotion and shower
immediately after tanning, it will prolong the tingle effect of that
lotion. If you use a DHA bronzing lotion, you need to give the
DHA time to work with the amino acids on your skin to see the
bronzing results.
