Should I Tan Year Round?

Why not? Are there not places around the world where there is year-round sun exposure?

Every year people tell us that they're gonna give their skin a "break" during the fall/winter. But sun exposure (indoors or outdoors) is our only way to achieve optimal amounts of Vitamin D for better health. And the process to create a tan is the same process the skin goes through to make our natural skin color. So saying you need to give your skin a "break" is like saying I'll stop breathing to give my lungs a break.

As a matter of fact, the biggest risk involved with sun exposure comes from over-exposure ONLY and the greatest risk for over-exposure is when the skin is pale and has no protective pigment/color.

So why not keep protective color year round and plenty of Vitamin D too?

Should I Tan Every Day?

No.

If you want the best tan, it's actually best to have 36-48 hours between each tanning visit.

After tanning, the skin goes through hyperplasia, which is a thickening of the skin caused by the intial sun and heat exposure. The skin (with proper skin care) will relax and the thickening will reside within a day or two allowing for better UV exposure and darker color.

Also, the process for producing new pigment can take up to 24-hours and won't begin for almost 6 hours after exposure. Therefore, the pigment that a sunbed can convert into instant color could take a day and a half to be present and available to improve your tan.

Basically, the science of tanning means faster, darker, longer lasting tans and healthier skin can be best achieved with a day or two in between every visit.

Should I Use a Tanning Lotion?

We sell the best tanning products available, so of course we're gonna say yes.

But ask any of the tanning consultants at our salons to show you their lotion. We all use lotion cause we all know the many benefits suncare products can offer to our tan and our skin, so why shouldn't YOU use a tanning lotion?

The skin is primarily made up of water.
The cells that produce pigment in your skin use trace minerals & amino acids.
The skin has delicate features that are suseptible to damage or aging.

Tanning products (even the most basic) are fueled with WATER, trace MINERALS, AMINO ACIDS and powerful anti-oxidants, free-radical scavangers and VITAMINS to help protect the skin from injury and promote a firmer more youthful appearence.

Tanning products are basically supplements providing your skin with what it needs to make plenty of color, fast! Clinical studies show that any professional tanning product can produce at least 30-40% better results while helping to prevent much of the risk of over-exposure.

If your goal is to get faster color, darker color and you want your tan to last longer, than you don't want a tanning lotion, you NEED one!

Can I Use My Tanning Product On My Face?

It's not a great idea. There are specially designed tanning products for the face and neck area of the skin for a few reasons.

  • The skin on the face is very sensitive to things like fragrance and the pores are prone to clogging from heavier oils. Face products are fragrance free and non-comedogenic (won't clog pores)
  • Many products are designed for very dry areas of the skin like knees, elbows, hands and feet. The facial skin cells retain moisture in a different way. Face products utilize moisturizing alternatives and special botanicals for delicate skin cells.
  • The skin on the face exfoliates faster than other areas of the body. Making and retaining color needs special amino acids and vitamins to help maintain the same color as the rest of the body.

Ask us about the right face product for you, to help make better color and to help take better care of the delicate skin of the face for better anti-aging and firmness.

Should I Use a Moistuizer After I Tan?

Tricky question, but the answer is mostly yes.

Most tanning products you would use at Cabana can provide at least 12-hour moisture after you tan. Problem is that a lot of people choose to shower shortly after a tanning visit and the heat and water of a shower will actually dry out the skin and make it hard to finish the tanning and pigment producing process.

The idea of replacing and replenshing moisture after a shower is a good one but the problem is that almost 93% of the skin care products in the world are counter-productive to creating moisture in the skin because they contain one or more of the following ingredients:

  • mineral oil (liquid petroleum)
  • petrolatum (white petroleum)
  • wax (bees, carnuba, emulsifying)
  • drying alcohols (Isopropyl, SD-40, Ethyl, de-natured)

Examples of bad products include:

  • Lubriderm
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Victoria's Secret
  • Nivea
  • Jergens
  • Aveeno
  • Suave
  • Dove
  • Cetaphil
  • Vaseline Body Care
  • And just about anything found in a grocery or drug store

These ingredients and products may lubricate the surface layer of the skin giving an immediate impression of moist skin but don't add water to the skin and don't promote healthier skin and some can actually cause aging and skin damage.

Do I Really Need to Use Protective Eyewear?

YES!

Do you want to go color blind, night blind or completely blind? Then wear your eyewear at all times in the sunbed and use sunglasses outdoors.

Slightly moving your eyewear periodically during a tanning visit will avoid the tell-tale "racoon-effect" lines. All FDA approved eyewear can be seen through so you can see the controls on the sunbed or your iPod.

There's no good reason for not wearing eyewear and a ton of reasons to wear them.

Be Smart and protect your eyes!

Sunlight Exposure and Cancer

This information may not be what you're used to hearing. No one here is advising you to stay out of the sun but rather encouraging everyone to get moderate exposure indoors or outdoors for a healthy lifestyle.

New research on sun exposure and the Vitamin D it creates is showing how healthy Vitamin D levels can significantly reduce our risk for most forms of cancer, including Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Prostate Cancer and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

What is a "base" tan?

A base tan is what people would think of as a protective tan to help reduce the risk of over-exposure outdoors or indoors. It is your body's natural defense mechanism to adapt to longer amounts of exposure. This is why it is an essential thing to have when going on a vacation that is closer to the tropical areas of the world and when you expect to spend more recreational time outdoors or on the beach than your normal 9-5 job, school or kids allow.

This type of tan can NOT be created by a spray tan or high-pressure sunbed alone. Many people get "cosmetic" color from one of these forms of bronzing and may assume it protects the same, but alas it does not.

Be sure to inform a Cabana Tanning Specialist of your tanning goals, so that they can suggest the right sunbeds or custom bronzing for the perfect end result.
